Understanding Psoriasis: A Perspective from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Living with psoriasis often feels like a constant battle with your own skin. While modern dermatology provides essential tools for managing flare-ups, many people find themselves curious about holistic frameworks like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) dermatology to support their long-term well-being.

In my clinic, I don't just look at the surface; I look at the internal environment that allows these "scales" to form.

The "Internal Weather" of Your Skin

In TCM theory, the skin is often a reflection of our internal health. We view psoriasis (historically referred to as Niupixuan) as a manifestation of specific "patterns" or imbalances. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, we look at your "internal weather":

  • Blood Heat: This often correlates with the red, angry, and itchy flare-ups. Skin is hot to touch and constitutionally, you lean towards feeling Heat or tends to run hot. In Chinese Medicine, we focus on "cooling" the blood to soothe the skin’s appearance.

  • Blood Dryness: Have you noticed your skin feels parched or the scales are particularly silvery and thin? This is often viewed as a lack of "Moisture" or "Yin" within the body’s systems. Skin often feels very dry and no matter how much moisturiser your slap on, it does not seem to hydrate the skin. In Chinese medicine, I use herbs that internally generates ‘Yin’ or moisture to build hydration from the inside out.

  • Stagnation: When patches become thick, dark, or persistent. This pattern is often seen in patients that have been battling with psoriasis for a long period of time or someone that are constantly under stress. TCM suggests that the body's "Qi" and circulation may need support to keep things moving effectively.

What Does a TCM Approach Look Like?

If you visit a registered TCM practitioner for psoriasis support, the process is deeply personalized. Following a thorough consultation, a management plan may include:

  1. Acupuncture: Used for centuries, acupuncture is often sought to support the body’s natural relaxation response and help manage the stress that frequently triggers psoriasis flare-ups.

  2. Herbal Formulas: Based on your specific pattern (Heat, Dryness, or Stagnation), custom herbal blends may be suggested. These are designed to support your body’s internal balance from the inside out.

  3. Dietary Therapy: We often suggest "cooling" foods like mung beans or cucumber for those with Heat patterns, or "nourishing" foods for those dealing with Dryness.

Managing a chronic condition like psoriasis is a marathon, not a sprint. By looking at the "root" and the "branch"—the internal cause and the external symptom—Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a traditional framework for those seeking a holistic addition to their health journey.

Ready to Explore a Personalized Approach?

Psoriasis presents differently for everyone, which is why a one-size-fits-all approach rarely suffices in Traditional Chinese Medicine. If you are looking to integrate Traditional Chinese Medicine into your skin health management plan, a clinical consultation is the first step. During this session, we will identify your specific pattern and discuss a supportive path forward. If you are unable to attend an in person consultation, telehealth provides a supportive alternative to managing your psoriasis.
